I was out at my brother and sister-in-law's place this past weekend for my niece's birthday. Sunday morning, I wanted to head out and take some photos. These two cuties pleaded to join me. They lasted about a minute (and let me take precisely one photo of each of them) before they raced back inside. It was very cold.

They live in a tiny town named Justice. The statistics are thus: there are three streets, two stop signs, and fourteen houses. A woman runs a small convenience store and post office out of her garage. The grain elevator sits empty and the old church is being renovated into a house.

I've never lived in a small town, much less the country. But somehow these photos still feel a bit like home. I'm a Manitoba girl. It's not California or France or Hawaii, but I do love its quiet beauty.

  2. There is something about small towns that often make you feel so at home. I grew up in a really small town and I think the best part, as a kid, was being able to play 'kick the can' around the whole town. There's just so much trust amongst everyone.

    1. I think that's definitely true, the majority of the time. The crazy thing is that this fall, some guy tried to pick up a little girl in his truck just a few houses away from my brother and sister-in-law. She ran away, straight to her house. But where was he from? Why was he cruising around a tiny town? So bizarre.

  15. i'm so intrigued by small towns. i've never been to anywhere east of the usa [just the western coast] and it just looks so gorgeous and even more in the snow! we don't get snow in sunny california or baja california.

  16. I love your photos. I'm sure many fellow Canadians would think I'm crazy for saying the following, but your photos make me want to visit Winnipeg/Manitoba. Just maybe not in the dead of winter or the heat of summer when there are black flies:P Spring or fall maybe?
