This past week, Mike & I booked our plane tickets to Hawaii for our honeymoon! Neither of us have ever been & we are deliriously excited. We plan to be on the island of Oahu for 4-5 days (Honolulu, Waikiki, the North Shore) and then on the island of Maui for about 10 days (road to Hana and then the west coast, most likely staying in Kihei & Lahaina).
Honeymoon planning has been a welcome diversion this semester. I've already devoured Lonely Planet: Maui and Lonely Planet: Oahu and pestered Kylie quite a bit (she has been extremely helpful!). We have a tentative itinerary plotted out, but we would love to hear any suggestions you might have. Places to visit, spots to avoid, where to stay, where to eat... anything!
Thanks so much!

would love to be any help, but unfortunaltey I have never been! However, I am SOO dreaming of going, must be wonderful!
ReplyDeletelooking foward to see many many pictures after your return! :)
congrats! I'm sure you can't go wrong with whatever you do :)
ReplyDeletethe sunset booze cruise in lahaina is super fun. i went in 07' during whale watching season & it was amazing! hookipa has some awesome waves too, but if you don't surf it's also fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteJanis--how exciting for you and Mike! When are you guys going to be there? I've never been so I can't wait to see your breathtaking pictures when you get back! :)

i wish i could offer some advice, but the only time i went was for a school conference thing and i didn't get to explore. what a relief to have your honeymoon booked though!
ReplyDeleteAwesome honeymoon destination!!
ReplyDeleteI was going to go to Hawaii last year, but the plan fell through.
I'm sure you guys will have a blast! Just don't get sunburned!
i could tell you a thing or two since i've been living here, but i'm sure kylie's got you covered...the usual north shore fun stuff!! waialua bakery in hale'iwa for fresh sandwiches! we just went yesterday and i forgot how much i love it.
ReplyDeleteIf you need any Maui recommendations my best friend lives there AND it is one of my favorite islands ... I know some secret spots that will be right up your alley. So excited for you!! XO!
ReplyDeleteThat is nice! You'll love Hawaii. Go for snorkling out in the ocean and swim with the dolphins. North shore got some of the best shrimps and shaved ice =)
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
@Amanada: We're going to be there August 8th - August 23rd!
ReplyDelete@Carolyne: We'd love to hear those secret spots!
I lived on Oahu for a couple of years. Haliewa is by far my most fave spot on the island. It's on the North Shore of Oahu. If you like Thai food, Haliewa Eats is the BEST. All of the Northshore is amazing. Don't spend too much time in Waikiki as it's full of over priced tourist traps. Great for 2 days max! You tire of all of the people. The best beach is on the east side in Kailua. The water is so clear. Look up Stairway to Heaven, it's one of the best hikes you'll ever do. It says its closed down and it looks quite eerie but it is amazing!!! I could ramble on for hours so I'll stop now. yaaaaay Hawaii!
ReplyDeletehow exciting! i've never been to hawaii either, so unfortunately i have no suggestions for you. but... i'm sure it will be amazing!
ReplyDeleteGoing somewhere warm? An amazing idea. Our honeymoon ended up raining the whole time which was fine, but going outside would have been wonderful hahacon
ReplyDeleteYay!!!! I'm so tickled for you! I bet it will feel so good to just relax after such a long semester.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! You will have so much fun and I love that postcard picture. Way cool!

I've never been but i've heard that Hawaii is a place straight out of your dreams with the mountains and the ocean. What a lovely place to honeymoon!
ReplyDeletei cant wait to see your pictures - they will be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteSo fun and great choice!!! Hawaii continues to be a popular honeymoon destination and who could be surprised why?! The islands are absoultely stunning. I have been to the Big Island, Maui, and Oahu; Maui is my favorite island because there is a mix of relaxation and nightlife. There is so much to do in Lahaina! I will be honeymooning in Maui June 27-July 5 :) Check out www.gohawaii.com for extra info :) Looking forward to seeing photos! -Jenny
ReplyDeleteIf you end up going on the road to Hana (which you really must!) I suggest driving it in a rented convertible. My family and I went in a touring van, which was super fun, but seeing all the convertibles passing us made me promise myself I'd revisit and do the road to Hana in a convertible (I'm sorry, I don't know how costly it is to do that but maybe you could find it on a website somewhere..?). Also on the road to Hana, I suggest stopping by at a few of the food tables/vendors the locals set up with homemade goodies; such as peanut brittle and banana bread. Another thing you sould do (if you dont mind heights) is zip lining through the forests. Then there was this one tour that took us kayaking down an inland river, through a forest, and finally to swim in a waterfall. Swimming in the waterfall was one of my favorite parts of the trip, so I hgighly suggest it; it's an incredible experience. Oh! And helicopter tours are insane! (Again, if you don't mind the height.) My family and I did two different ones. One took us over top of the active volcano where we saw the lava flowing across the land and into the ocean (we visited Hawaii this past July). The other took us over forests and we saw many waterfalls, the coastline, mountains, etc. Other things yall might enjoy might be visiting the black sand beaches (there are some along the road to Hana), surf lessons (I don't know if that's a honeymoon thing to do but I'm 15 and enjoyed that haha), hula dancing, sunset cruise, hiking around some extinct volcanoes, and snorkeling (Hawaii has great snorkeling). My last suggestion is to eat a lot of fresh fruit (like from the fruit stands which you'll easliy be able to find all around but especially on the North Shore and along the road to Hana). I'm a big fan of fresh fruit, and Hawaii has plenty of it. So if you like food/fruit then try the dragonfruit, papaya, coconuts (at fruit stands with signs that say "fresh coconuts", they have boxes of whole coconuts which you pick yours from. Then they'll split it right there for you, open it up and give you a straw for the juice and a spoon for the "meat". Even though I wasn't too keen on the coconut, it was an awesome experience.), pineapples, and the many other tropical fruit that you might not find many other places.
ReplyDeleteSorry for such a long comment, but I hope this helps yall with ideas on what to do! Also, sorry for any miss-spellings!
I'm so happy I found your blog! I love it! Your pictures are so great. And my wedding band is from Satomi Kawakita, too! I love the one your fiancee chose for you. :)
ReplyDeletelove that postcard design, love that you're going to hawaii (my old stomping grounds), and love that you gave me a shout out! and honestly, i think you are just a wonderful person. so sad we couldn't be there to meet up! you are a gem. i can just feel it when i look at your blog.
ReplyDeleteOh wow have a ball!!!
ReplyDeleteHawaii! What a dream for your honeymoon! I wish I could give you some tips, but I still have not been. I've been planning our trip to Hawaii for 2 years (it just isn't time, yet)

i love your blog & all these photos are amazing! We are going to Kauai this September and are so excited :)
ReplyDeletedefinitely eat at mama's fish house on maui. it is expensive but worth every penny. you will feel like you stepped into "old hawaii" more of vintage hawaiian feel. i recommend lunch over dinner for the amazing view and the fact that you will want to stay all day.
ReplyDeleteRoad to Hana = on my life list. So jealous! It will be lovely, I'm sure!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATS FROM YOUR HONEY MOON!
ReplyDeletei would be deliriously excited too. hopefully it just looks like the postcard :)
ReplyDeletehave a wonderful time! you'll love it i'm sure. never been to Oahu but have been to maui twice and kauai twice. Kauai is my fave by far but maui is very lovely. I loved Sansei sushi on Maui, and you should head up to honolua bay for a stunning view at sunset as well to join the gallery watching the locals shred below (longest right ever!). Try to get up to paia for a bit of hippiedom. Mama's fish house is over-rated - i wouldn't do it. Make sure you grab a plate lunch somewhere. Aloha mixed grill is nice. you can see my post on my last trip to maui here

Love this retro postcard. Hawaii is amazing! You'll love it!
ReplyDeletep.s. great blog you have here!
Your latest follower!
my grandparents lived in hawaii so we would visit oahu as kids in the summertime :) i would say, definitely go to the north shore. there's a lot of action in honolulu {which is a definite must see}, but if you rent a car, def get on the outskirts + get a plate lunch or saimin bowl. also search out some shave ice from matsumoto's {the absolute best!!} one of my favorite beaches is kailua beach...the sand is pretty, the beach is clean + generally less crowded. you might have to fight some wicked traffic depending on the hours you travel, but so very worth it!!
