2/3/12

Winnipeg winters are known for being bitterly cold. While some relish all the snow sports that the season provides, I much prefer holing up inside with a book (never the sporty type!). However, this winter has been unlike any I can remember. It's been unseasonably warm (which is slightly worrisome, I suppose), with temperatures hovering around zero celsius. Rather than cursing my existence every time I set out the door (even running between the house and the car is horrendous when it's -40° C), I've been enjoying my walks to school and around our neighbourhood.

And to top it all off, we've also woken up to hoar frost the last three mornings. "Hoar" is an Old English adjective for showing signs of age. Apparently the trees and bushes look elderly with their white hair. I think that's a beautiful (and apt!) description!

Last winter (2011).
The winter before that (2010).

  1. I'm not much of a winter gal myself, but I must admit ... it's peaceful looking out there during this time. Thanks for sharing a new word. :)

  2. I got so chilly looking at those photos. But they are so stunning! And that word, 'hoar' is a perfect description. Never heard it before..

  4. i know just how you feel! today i have a snow day (the perks of working for a school district) and i've been reading/brunching/fire-making all day...

i bet you're seriously lovin' the unconventional february warmth :)

  5. Wow. I love your photos. Given I don't live in a place that gets this kind of weather it just seems like a wonderful fantasy land to me. Although I understand it must get so unbearably cold. Here in Australia, as much as I hate to think it about any season, I am finding myself wishing for the end of our hot, humid summer.

  6. I agree - not usually a fan of our winter but the last few days have been so lovely and have had me spending hours outdoors. Even with the fog the weather has lifted my spirits and made me relaxed as well!

    Happy weekend - lovely photos {as always}!

  11. The trees look pretty like that! Even though it's cold there! Brr. I'm surprised it's not colder where I am in VA. We've been having warm weather lately. Fingers crossed it'll stay like that!

  12. You are so incredibly lucky to have snow and coldness! A CLOUD, even. Here, in California, the seasons are inverse, apparently-- it's been seventy+ degrees every day for the past couple of weeks. I want the cold! And the rain! And the clouds! Anything!

    Those pictures are beautiful, also.

  27. i never knew what the frost was called! it was always my favourite thing about winnipeg winters. it's been unbelievably warm here too.

i used to live in the west end when i was a little kid and these photos remind me of my childhood. that sounds so pretentious but it's true!
